ACM collaborates with European Commission on market investigation into cloud services
Summary
- ACM works together with the European Commission on DMA investigations into cloud services.
- The objective of the DMA is to protect businesses and consumers, and to offer more choice.
- This marks the first time that the European Commission and ACM work together in this manner.
The European Commission has launched three market investigations into cloud services under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) collaborates with the European Commission on these investigations in a joint investigation team. One of these investigations is aimed at possible barriers to switching to other competitors, interoperability between cloud services, access to data for business users, and the use of bundling with other services. By eliminating barriers, European companies are able to enter the cloud market more easily, and are able to compete with major non-European competitors.
DMA: protecting businesses and consumers in the digital world
The DMA contains obligations for the largest digital platforms, which are called gatekeepers. The objective of the DMA is to protect businesses and consumers, and to offer more choice in the digital world. In addition, the DMA must create more growth opportunities for businesses in digital markets. The European Commission can take action if gatekeepers violate the DMA, for example, imposing fines. The DMA also offers the European Commission the option of creating a joint investigation team with one or more national authorities, such as ACM. The joint investigation team that investigates cloud services is an example thereof. This marks the first time that the European Commission and ACM work together in this manner.
