OPTA and NMa wish to ensure competition in the telecommunications market

OPTA and NMa have ruled that, when it comes to calls within a region (local ones), there is too small a difference between the charges which KPN levies on consumers and the tariffs for which it bills its competitors for using its network (interconnection tariffs). KPN will be asked to present solutions for this price squeeze.

Today OPTA and NMa published their jointly formulated Price Squeeze Guidelines [Richtsnoeren prijsqueeze]. When there is a price squeeze, it is almost impossible for providers other than KPN to compete. This leads to diminished competition in the long run, with the result that consumer charges are able to rise again. At present calls terminating outside a region, calls to mobile phones and Internet access calls using a 06760 number satisfy the price squeeze standard. At a later stage the case may be extended to other services with the aim of ensuring fair, sustainable competition. Because of their overlapping jurisdiction, OPTA and NMa decided to produce joint guidelines.
