NMa conditionally clears acquisition of Dutch supermarket chain C1000 by rival chain Jumbo

The Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa) has cleared the acquisition of more than 400 locations of Dutch supermarket chain C1000 by rival chain Jumbo on the condition that Jumbo in 18 towns must sell either a Jumbo or C1000 location to a competitor subject to NMa approval.

Supermarket chain Jumbo decided to adjust its original acquisition plans after the NMa had found that the planned acquisition could restrict competition in 18 local or regional markets. Selling locations in these markets ensures that enough options for consumers will remain after the acquisition. The NMa does not see any antitrust concerns at a national level, as Jumbo’s post-acquisition market share will still be relatively modest, and as it continues to face competition from strong competitors.

Jumbo is required to sell locations in the following towns: Baarle-Nassau, Beilen, Bleiswijk, Bunschoten-Spakenburg, Dedemsvaart, Deurne, Dokkum, Grave, Heeswijk-Dinther, Kampen, Meerssen, Meijel, Oirschot, Raalte, Raamsdonksveer, Surhuisterveen, Ter Apel and Zuidlaren.

The decision (in Dutch) will be published on the NMa’s website soon.
