NMa Ceases Investigation into Sugar Sector
NMa has ceased its investigation into the possible anti-competitive practices of a number of Dutch sugar manufacturers. The investigation into the sugar sector has not produced any concrete evidence of an infringement of the Competition Act.
In addition, the European Commission made a number of major changes to European sugar policy in July 2006 following proposals for reform. For these reasons, NMa has ceased its investigation. If it receives new information in the future, NMa may decide to reopen the investigation.
NMa started its investigation into possible anti-competitive agreements between sugar manufacturers and fodder traders (traders in, for instance, fodder produced from sugar beet) following reports from the market. In April 2004, NMa carried out on-site inspections of various sugar manufacturers. NMa also had discussions with various market parties.
