Dutch energy supplier ANWB Energie has committed to ACM to resolve its problems with sending bills no later than June 12

Summary

  • ACM has tightened its oversight over ANWB Energie due to problems with sending annual and final bills.
  • ANWB has committed to ACM that all backlogs will be cleared by June 12, 2026.
  • If the issues are not resolved by then, ACM will take additional measures

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has tightened its oversight over Dutch energy supplier ANWB Energie. Due to IT issues, ANWB Energie has, for several months now, not been able to send customers their annual and final bills within the statutory term of six weeks. ANWB has made a commitment to ACM that all backlogs will be cleared by June 12, 2026. The company has also informed all of the approximately 10,000 customers affected by this.

If the problems have not been resolved by June 12, 2026, ACM will take additional measures. ACM will keep an extra close watch on ANWB Energie until all problems for customers have been resolved.

Tightened oversight

ACM has recently received many complaints and questions regarding the late annual and final bills of ANWB Energie. ANWB Energie itself has also approached ACM, and has explained that the backlogs are caused by problems with the automation system. As the problems at ANWB Energie have persisted for some time now, ACM decided to tighten its oversight. ANWB Energie must inform ACM every week of the steps that the company takes in order to resolve the problems. Additionally, ANWB Energie reports weekly on the number of customers who have to wait for their annual and final bills for too long.

Requirements for suppliers

ANWB Energie is an energy supplier with a license from ACM. ACM sees to it that ANWB Energie complies with the rules. One aspect thereof involves sending and paying annual and final bills on time. This is important, because suppliers must have their administrative systems in order, and pay refunds to those who are entitled to them. According to the law, all energy suppliers (including ANWB Energie) are required to send the final bills within six weeks after the end date of the contract. With regard to annual bills, suppliers are required to send them within a reasonable period. ACM considers six weeks also to be a reasonable period for annual bills.
