ACM reminds telecom providers of data-roaming tariff change
On January 1, 2018, one small element of the roaming tariffs will change, which is the maximum wholesale tariff for data roaming. With this tariff, telecom providers are able to determine how many gigabytes their customers are allowed to use at local tariffs when abroad. After January 2018, ACM will take action sooner if providers do not comply with the rules. For example, ACM can impose fines. Telecom providers have until January 2018 to contact ACM if they encounter any problems in connection with the new rules. Until then, ACM will try and help such providers, and make arrangements in order to realize a proper implementation of the roaming rules.
Maximum wholesale tariff decreases
Since 15 June 2017, when using their phones abroad, consumers pay the same tariffs as those in their plans back home. This also applies to businesses. However, telecom providers are allowed to set a cap on the amount of gigabytes that is used at local tariffs. The maximum wholesale tariff for data roaming drops from EUR 7.70 per GB to EUR 6.00 per GB, starting in 2018. These tariffs do not inlucde VAT yet.
About the new roaming rules
The new roaming rules apply to consumers and business customers when they call, text or surf online with their mobile phone within the European Union and in some of their overseas territories. Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein have also adopted said rules. They do not apply to any other country.
Calculation tool for consumers
ACM has created a handy Roaming Calculation tool for consumers on ConsuWijzer.nl (in Dutch). With it, consumers are able to calculate easily how many GB they are at least entitled to be able to use abroad at ‘roam-like-at-home’ rates.
