ACM publishes tariff proposals of distribution system operators and TenneT for 2026
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has published on its website the tariff proposals of the distribution system operators and of Dutch transmission system operator of the national high-voltage grid TenneT. As already announced in September by ACM, households and businesses with connections to the distribution systems for natural gas and electricity are expected to pay 3.38 percent more in 2026 for the transport of electricity and natural gas. For an average household, this amounts to an increase of approximately 25 euros per year (including VAT). Large businesses that are directly connected to the (extra) high-voltage grid of TenneT are expected to pay approximately 10 to 12 percent less.
The costs of system operators need to be collectively paid by all users of the grids (households and businesses) through the transport tariffs. ACM will assess the system operators’ tariff proposals, and expects to publish the tariff decisions by late November.
The decrease in TenneT’s tariffs is an incidental decrease, which is caused by, among other factors, increased grid usage as a result of which the allowed revenues are distributed over higher volumes. Grid tariffs are expected to increase over the next few years. Households and businesses are increasingly switching from fossil fuels to electricity generated from sustainable sources. This switch is important for achieving the climate goals. This transition is taking place so fast that many households and businesses at the moment are already waiting to get new or upgraded network connections. System operators need to make large investments for upgrading their grids as well as for clearing this backlog. As households and businesses are using less and less natural gas, the total costs for maintaining and adjusting the gas network need to be distributed over fewer and fewer users. As a result, the network tariffs for natural gas will go up over the next few years, too.
