ACM publishes overview of measures against grid congestion

Over the past few months, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has created a broad set of measures that are aimed at helping system operators and businesses reduce the problem of grid congestion. ACM finds it important that businesses and system operators start implementing these measures as soon as possible. To help businesses, system operators, advisors, local governments, and other market participants in that implementation, ACM has created an overview of all measures.

As a result of continued electrification and the increasing share of renewable energy in the energy mix, demand for energy is increasing. This leads to a shortage of transmission capacity on various points on the grid. We call this grid congestion.

In ACM’s overview, all measures have been listed that have been or are being taken by ACM to reduce this congestion. These measures include various new opportunities for buyers to secure transmission capacity (also in times of scarcity), incentives to utilize the scarce transmission capacity more efficiently, as well as several ways to help (for a fee) system operators prevent or solve congestion. Additionally, with this overview, buyers and system operators are informed about the opportunities for new capacity requests (or expansions thereof) in congestion areas, and about rules they need to take into consideration when assessing their investment decisions.
Businesses, advisors, local governments, and other market participants may contact ACM with questions about these rules by sending an email to this address netcongestie [at] acm [punt] nl.
