The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) wishes to gain more insight into the functioning of the markets for hospital information systems, and into the digital exchange of information within health care. To that end, ACM has hired consulting firm KPMG to carry out a market study.
Digitalization in the health-care sector
Digitalization in the health-care sector offers opportunities to improve the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care in the Netherlands. In that context, it is important that health care providers and patients have the right information at the right time in the right place. In order to achieve that, it is essential that different systems are able to exchange digital information smoothly.
There are currently different initiatives that aim to accelerate these developments. A broad cross-section of the market realizes that developments in the Netherlands do not go fast enough (or not yet). That stands in the way of high-quality, comprehensive health care, and slows down innovation in the digital health-care sector. That is why ACM conducts a sector study into possible market problems with regard to hospital information systems, and into the exchange of information in the health-care sector. The market study is part of this sector study.
The market study will describe how the different markets work. KPMG will take stock of the market behavior of IT suppliers, hospitals, and other parties involved. In addition, KPMG will identify what obstructions the different parties involved experience as a result of this market behavior, including identifying the contexts and reasons for that behavior.
KPMG will conduct the market study on the basis of desk research, questionnaires and interviews with IT suppliers, hospitals, and other parties involved. These parties will be contacted soon, and be invited to take part in the market study.
ACM expects to publish the results of the market study by the end of the year, and will then gladly sit down with various stakeholders to discuss the results of the market study.
